Welcome to the West Village

Historic, hip, and an uncommonly close-knit community atmosphere

Less than five miles away from downtown, the West Village is a tree-lined green haven. Lush front yards and welcoming front porches line the street in this hip and historic community. With parks, converted greenspaces paying tribute to the neighborhood’s colorful past, and a plethora of authentic Detroit-style cuisine available just around the block, the West Village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The West Village is primarily residential, with a number of great architectural styles represented. Queen Anne, Tudor, and Georgian Revival-style homes give character and pay tribute to the Detroit of yesteryear. The West Village formed a neighborhood association in the ‘70s and holds regular events throughout the year - like BYOB potlucks, fall festivals, and barbecue block parties. Events like these have helped citizens of the West Village realize there truly is no place like home.

What to Love

  • The historic architecture allows West Village dwellers to feel as if they have stepped back in time in this adored, historic community.
  • The West Village is hip and happening, with some of Detroit’s best restaurants and shops located here.
  • New residents are often surprised by the charm and sense of community not normally found so close to downtown.
  • Although the West Village is buzzing, it is largely residential within and is a quiet, calm place to call home.

Local Lifestyle

Life in the West Village is peaceful. Older homes from Detroit’s past have been renovated and restored to their former glory over the past few years, breathing new life into the district. The influx of new denizens has brought in new and unique businesses, providing West Village dwellers with hip coffee shops, authentic ethnic cuisine, and funky variety stores, all set against the backdrop of mature trees and lush, green lawns.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Neighborhood revitalization has brought new life to the West Village and with it, a fresh generation of businesses, coffee roasters, shops, and things to do. Some feature classics like signature Detroit-style pizza, while others have brought recipes from their own homelands, giving residents a taste of the South, the Mediterranean, and more.

Belle Isle Pizza serves up fresh, artisanal Detroit-style pizza seven days a week in the heart of the West Village, with delivery also available. Sandwiches and oven-baked subs are also sold, along with salads, for those looking for something lighter. Another healthy option can be found at Detroit Vegan Soul. In 2010, the owners adopted a vegan lifestyle after one of the co-owners lost their father to cancer. Their recipes were a hit, and by 2012, the dream of Detroit Vegan Soul had been realized. Re-vamped southern favorites on their menu include the soul food plate and tofu “catfish.”

For nights when meat is a necessity, Marrow is the go-to. Detroit’s first neighborhood butcher shop is also a two-time James Beard Award-nominated restaurant offering the freshest “farm-to-fork” meat in the city. Patrons can select from fresh cuts to bring back home, or dine in-house on beef tartare, pork belly, or dry-aged steaks. If you’re taking it home to cook, why not pick up something for dessert on the way? Sister Pie is an adored spot for sweet treats and seasonal pies like apple sage gouda and salted maple.

Things To Do

Open since 1912 and centrally located, the Indian Village Tennis Club is a favorite in the neighborhood. In addition to the tennis courts, the club features gated parking, locker rooms, a commercial kitchen, and spacious dining area, and a bar. Just a few blocks away is the new Butzel Playfield. Recent renovations include improved landscaping, new playscapes, more outdoor activities, and new entrances across the eight acres.
